Game Play

DARVO™ for a Party

For friends, game nights, or playful strangers.

Objective

Be the first player to score 5 points by delivering the most convincing, entertaining, or over-the-top DARVO or Assertive performance.

Setup

  • Shuffle the Trigger, DARVO, and Assertive Response decks into separate stacks.
  • Each player starts with 3 to 5 DARVO cards in hand. (depending on number of players)

Gameplay

  1. Trigger Activation – Choose an initiator. The Initiator draws a Trigger and reads it aloud to the group.
  2. DARVO Responses – All other players choose 1 card from their hand and perform it dramatically. Encourage humor, exaggeration, and performance flair.
  3. Judging – The group (or rotating Judge) votes for the funniest/most believable DARVO act. The winner gets 1 point and takes the trigger card as a trophy.
  4. Assertive Reversal (Optional) – The Initiator may play an Assertive card to counter the DARVO. If the group agrees it “defused” the DARVO effectively, the Initiator wins the point instead.
  5. Rounds Continue – First to 5 points wins.

Tone

High-energy, theatrical, comedic. Think improv + satire.

DARVO™ for a Workshop

For therapy, counseling, HR, or educational settings.

Objective

Learn to recognize DARVO tactics, reflect on personal experiences, and practice assertive responses. Winning is secondary; awareness and discussion are the goals.

Setup

  • Shuffle decks into stacks.
  • Facilitator (therapist, trainer, educator) guides play.

Gameplay

  1. Trigger Activation – A volunteer or facilitator draws a Trigger and reads it aloud.
  2. DARVO Responses – One or more players draw a DARVO card and roleplay it sincerely. Performances can be subtle, not theatrical.
  3. Group Reflection – Players pause to identify the DARVO tactic, discuss real-world parallels, and how it might feel to be on the receiving end.
  4. Assertive Reversal – Facilitator or Initiator introduces Assertive cards. The group evaluates which strategies would be effective in real life.
  5. Scoring (Optional) – Instead of points, award “insight tokens” for spotting DARVO tactics or suggesting healthy responses.

Tone

Supportive, reflective, and educational. Humor is welcome but guided by context.

Game Description

DARVO™ is not just a game; it’s a journey into the complexities of human behavior and moral ambiguity. Players will find themselves questioning their choices and the motivations of others as they engage in this darkly comedic role play.

Engaging Experience

With its unique blend of humor and psychological insight, DARVO™ offers players a chance to explore their own moral boundaries while having fun. The game encourages critical thinking and lively discussions among players.

As players navigate through the game, they will encounter various scenarios that challenge their perceptions and prompt them to think critically about manipulation and morality. This makes DARVO™ not only entertaining but also thought-provoking.

Based on the psychological concept of DARVO, Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender, first identified by Dr. Jennifer Freyd, our work draws inspiration from the clarity her research has brought to understanding manipulative dynamics. While we are in no way affiliated with Dr. Freyd or her academic institutions, we are deeply grateful for the insights her scholarship has made accessible. Her work has helped illuminate patterns of psychological abuse that often go unnamed, and it serves as a foundational lens through which we approach the themes of DARVO.xyz.
